Zagreb Cathedral, officially named the Cathedral of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and Saints Stephen and Ladislaus, is the most important sacral building in Croatia and one of the most recognizable symbols of the city of Zagreb. Located in the historic city centre, it has for centuries represented the spiritual, cultural, and urban heart of the Croatian capital. The original cathedral was built in the 11th century and has been damaged and reconstructed several times throughout history due to wars and earthquakes. Its present Neo-Gothic appearance was shaped following the great Zagreb earthquake of 1880, based on the design of architect Hermann Bollé. The cathedral is distinguished by its monumental architecture, twin spires, richly articulated façade, and exceptionally valuable sacral and artistic interior.
In the strong earthquake that struck Zagreb in March 2020, the Cathedral suffered severe structural damage. Vaults, walls, and numerous architectural and artistic elements were damaged, while the southern spire partially collapsed. Due to significant safety risks, the Cathedral was closed to the public, and a complex, long-term process of structural and comprehensive restoration was initiated. The reconstruction of Zagreb Cathedral represents one of the most important and most technically demanding cultural heritage restoration projects in the Republic of Croatia.
